THOUGH IT WAS NOT EVEN five oâclock, the sun had set. Aileen realized they were nearing the winter solstice with the longest night of the year. A pagan holiday. Would Madam Sofia and her coven celebrate then? Would they have reason to?
As she walked back to Main Street, the moon was already rising in the night sky and casting a blue glow over the snow-covered earth. Some of the shops and businesses had already closed, and others would soon do the same. She hadnât meant to stay away from the lodge so late.
Hurrying along, she thought about Rhys, about the attraction Sofia had said was beyond normal. The old woman had been right about that. Maybe she was right about a lot of things.
Stopping at the edge of town, Aileen pulled the leather pouch from her pocket and took a better look. The beading seemed familiarâ¦similar to the beading on the leather pouch Rhys had been wearing earlier. Undoubtedly, heâd gone to see Madam Sofia himself. A thought that made her spine prickle.
Starting off on the shortcut from town to the lodge, Aileen couldnât help being preoccupied, going over the old womanâs claims. And since Rhys wore the protection Madam Sofia had given him, he must believe in the supernatural. No wonder heâd been reading the book about werewolves.
Aileen looked up through the thicket of trees to the night sky. Indeed, the moon was almost full. A shiver coursed through her and she glanced back at the fading light from town, which suddenly seemed so far away.
Why hadnât she taken the damn snowmobile?
Hurrying on, she thought again of Rhys and wondered if he wore the leather pouch because he knew something she didnât, a possibility sheâd considered several times.
Rhys hung around the pack. What if a werewolf did also, as Madam Sofia had suggested? Had Rhys seen it? Did he recognize it for what it was? Did he know the identity of the man who changed into a wolf?
The identity of the murderer?
Her pulse picked up a beat at the thought, though knowing and proving were two different things.
A shush of snow from somewhere nearby made Aileen suspect someone else was using the shortcut. Another glance back assured her that no one was behind her, and yet, she couldnât relax. The oddest feelingâlike a hostile gaze tracking herâmade her move faster. And then she heard another noiseâa low rumble that raised the hair at the back of her neck. Someone was there, just out of sight.
Someone or something?
Damn Madam Sofia for scaring her!
Her mouth went dry and her throat tightened as she hurried on, now tuned into the night.
Were those footsteps she heard? Or her imagination? No, they were real.
Her stomach clenched and Aileen fumbled in her pocket and wrapped shaky fingers around the pouch that was supposed to protect her. She pulled it out and pressed her hand to her chest. Moving so fast that she was almost skating on the slippery path, she could hardly breathe as the sounds inched closer.
